Modern solutions in today’s fast-paced world are like having a Swiss Army knife—versatile, efficient, and equipped with all the tools needed to tackle a variety of problems in an ever-evolving world. Personally, I see the Mujassam Watan competition as one of this era’s modern solutions. This pioneering initiative strives to celebrate Saudi Arabia’s rich cultural heritage and foster nationwide pride.
Launched in 2018, the annual competition, which is a part of the Al Fozan Community Service Program, aims to transform creative architectural works into real-life sculptures. Each year, the winning designs become a lasting landmark in public spaces throughout the kingdom, such as squares and roundabouts. These artistic works are usually revealed each year on the National Day and Founding Day of the Saudi Arabian kingdom. In past seasons, landmarks like Al-Bairaq Roundabout, Al-Ardah Square, and Khobar Memory Square have been established and showcased.
The Role of Dar Al-Hekma University
Dar Al-Hekma University stands as a beacon of academic excellence, nurturing visionary architects and designers who contribute to building nations. The university actively produces leaders who partake in initiatives, competitions, and programs to promote their excellence and establish their names in different fields. By encouraging a culture of creativity and collaboration, Dar Al-Hekma aligns its mission with Saudi Vision 2030, supporting transformative projects that enhance the quality of life for Saudi citizens and residents alike.
As for the Mujassam Watan competition, 2024 marks the second consecutive year that a graduate from Dar Al-Hekma has proudly won it. This not only fosters desired social harmony but also promotes art appreciation in the region. The university’s commitment to innovation drives cultural and creative progress, ensuring students are well-equipped to merge heritage with needed modern development.
Winner of the Square Track for the 6th Season
The winning design of the square track’s 6th season was the concept of Al-Qallafah Square—a design made by a group of three leading designers in the kingdom. Among the team is Layal Azzan, an architecture bachelor graduate from Dar Al-Hekma and a talented designer in the region. The team competed against more than 110 entries that were submitted to the long-awaited annual competition. After making it to the finals, the team’s design was chosen to win first place by a judgment jury. This jury was composed of leading architects, engineers, sculptors, designers, and artists, all with enormous experience gained over many years. This gave the Al-Qallafah Square design a green light to be brought to life, just like previous squares.
A Closer Look At Al-Qallafah Square
The square is an interactive sculpture that was inspired by the traditional craft locally called Al-Qallafah. Al-Qallaf is an Arabic term that refers to the shipwright who was responsible for building traditional ships in the Arabian Gulf region. The square offers visitors a unique experience that simulates boarding the boat, allowing for a closer look at such a fantastic craft that is closely tied to the Saudi heritage.
